Understanding the Transition

Menopause is a natural biological process, yet for many women, it brings significant physical and emotional changes. It marks the end of menstrual cycles and is diagnosed after 12 months without a menstrual period.

However, the transition—known as perimenopause—can begin years earlier, bringing symptoms like hot flushes, sleep disturbances, and mood shifts. At The Ghanem Clinic, we provide expert guidance to navigate this journey with confidence and vitality.

Common Questions

Understanding your menopause options.

What exactly is perimenopause?+
Perimenopause is the transition toward menopause where your estrogen levels rise and fall unpredictably. This causes irregular periods, hot flashes, mood shifts, sleep changes, and vaginal dryness. It’s your body preparing for the end of menstruation.
How do I know if the symptoms I’m feeling are hormonal?+
If you’re noticing cycle changes, sudden temperature shifts, irritability, low mood, poor sleep, brain fog, or new vaginal symptoms in your 40s, it’s very likely hormonal. These symptoms are common — and treatable.
Why am I gaining weight even though nothing in my lifestyle has changed?+
Falling estrogen slows metabolism, reduces muscle mass, and changes how your body stores fat. Many women gain weight — especially around the abdomen — despite eating and exercising the same way.
Why do I feel more anxious, emotional, or unlike myself?+
Estrogen influences serotonin, the hormone that stabilises mood. When levels fluctuate, so can your emotions. These shifts are biological, not psychological — and respond well to targeted treatment.
Can menopause affect my heart and long-term health?+
Yes. Lower estrogen increases the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Bone density also declines. Early assessment and hormone-aware treatment can significantly protect long-term health.
What about my memory? Is brain fog normal?+
Completely. Many women experience forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating due to hormonal changes. The good news: brain fog usually improves with proper menopause management and lifestyle support.
What is HRT, and is it safe for me?+
Hormone Replacement Therapy replaces the estrogen your body no longer produces. It’s the most effective treatment for hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Whether it’s right for you depends on your health history — a personalised assessment determines this safely.
What if I can’t take HRT or prefer not to?+
You still have options. Non-hormonal medications, lifestyle strategies, CBT, and local (vaginal) estrogen treatments can significantly reduce symptoms. Many women achieve excellent relief without systemic hormones.
Is it normal for my intimate life to change?+
Yes. Vaginal dryness, discomfort, low libido, and reduced confidence are extremely common and linked to estrogen decline. Restoring moisture, improving sleep, reducing stress, and — if appropriate — using HRT can revive sexual wellbeing.
When should I see a menopause specialist?+
If your symptoms affect your sleep, mood, relationships, work, energy, or sense of self — it’s time. You don’t need to struggle through this. Modern menopause care offers highly effective, personalised solutions.
